Pinterest’s Community Guidelines run to several thousand words of policy language. Here’s what you actually need to know as a creator or business owner.
The Core Principle
Pinterest describes itself as a positive, inspirational platform. Their guidelines are designed to keep it that way. Content that misleads, harms, or harasses people doesn’t belong on Pinterest — and Pinterest actively removes it.
What’s Not Allowed on Pinterest
Misinformation: False or misleading health claims, conspiracy theories, and fabricated news. Pinterest is stricter than most platforms on this — especially for health and medical content.
Adult content: Explicit sexual content is prohibited on Pinterest (and their Safe Search system actively filters for it). Tasteful images of the body in artistic or educational contexts are generally allowed; anything explicitly sexual is not.
Hateful content: Content targeting people based on race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or other protected characteristics.
Self-harm content: Pinterest has specific policies around eating disorders, suicide, and self-harm — they actively redirect searches on these topics to crisis resources.
Dangerous activities: Instructions or glorification of dangerous activities that could harm the creator or others.
Spam: Repetitive pins, misleading titles, mass-pinning the same URL, or any behaviour designed to game the feed. See Pinterest Violation Notice for what triggers a warning.
Copyright infringement: Pinning images you don’t own without permission. Use your own photos, licensed stock images, or properly attributed content.
What IS Allowed
- Commercial content (affiliate links, sponsored content) — but must be clearly disclosed
- Mature content (violence in news context, alcohol, tobacco) — filtered from Safe Search by default but allowed for adults
- Promoting products and services — Pinterest actively supports business creators
- Repinning content from other creators — this is core to how Pinterest works
For Business Accounts
Pinterest has specific advertising and promotions policies that apply to Business accounts running ads. If you’re running promoted pins, review the Advertising Guidelines separately.
Practical Tips for Staying Compliant
- Use accurate titles that match what the linked page actually contains
- Don’t post the same pin URL to 10 boards in an hour — space your publishing out
- If you use automation, use tools that work via Pinterest’s official API
PinPublish is API-based and built to operate within Pinterest’s guidelines — no scraping, no fake clicks, no spam behaviour.
